More than 300 guests and crew fall ill on Ruby Princess cruise ship

cruise ship sickness 2023

The boarding/embarkation of new passengers is often delayed to permit more extensive disinfection of public areas and the cabins. Usually, a pre-embarkation health advisory is distributed to all boarding passengers. Additional med staff is sent to the ship in port to assist the disembarkation of infected passengers. Another possibility is the cruise ship to cancel all the itinerary's foreign ports of call and to return to its US home-port before the end of the voyage.

Secondly, clean and disinfect high touch surfaces such as doorknobs, faucets, handles, and that statue of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the dining hall. Use either a chlorine bleach solution that has a concentration of at least 1,000 to 5,000 parts per million or use a disinfectant that’s registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as being effective versus norovirus. The navies of USA, UK, Australia, China, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and Japan have some classes of military ships fitted with onboard hospitals. Generally, Zika is a mosquito-borne virus spread by Aedes aegypti (aka "yellow fever mosquito") and Aedes albopictus (aka "Asian tiger mosquito"). However, it became "cruise virus" since the decease can also result from intrauterine (contraceptive device), sexual intercourse, blood transfusion, lab exposure, organ/tissue transplantation, breast milk transmission. Caroline Kee is a health reporter at TODAY based in New York City.

The cause of the outbreak — which has impacted roughly 5% of the ship’s passenger population — is still unknown, but the CDC notes that norovirus outbreaks are primarily caused by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water. Norovirus cases aboard cruise ships have spiked for the first time in over 10 years, and experts believe more lenient travel restrictions and an increase in cruise passengers following the Covid pandemic are to blame. In total, 284 of 2,881 passengers on the Ruby Princess reported being sick during the voyage between Feb. 26 and March 5, CDC investigators said, and 34 of the 1,159 crew members also reported illness. The most recent outbreak hit passengers and crew members on board a Viking Cruises trip from Iceland that docked in New York on June 20. More than 13% of passengers on the Viking Neptune — 110 of 838 in total — reported being ill while onboard, according to the CDC.

The virus also spreads fecally, so you can catch it into the onboard laundry, or while changing diapers, etc. However, many passengers likely can blame a sick crewmember for the virus. According to a survey based on 170 inspection records on ships that docked in Florida ports in 2012, on 59 cruises violations of the required illness reporting laws were reported. A total of 130 crew had gotten sick on those voyages and didn't report their illness in the required time period.

First, what causes these outbreaks?

Prices for the voyage, which began on March 31 and ended on April 16, started at $11,700 for a double-occupancy room, according to CruiseMapper. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. The ship includes multiple kitchens, grills and even an interactive space where guests can cook with Compton.

Illnesses You Can Get on a Cruise Ship (Besides COVID)

This decline may be due to a combination of improved hygiene and sanitation standards. Like other affected cruise ships, Holland America told the CDC it has increased cleaning and disinfection procedures to deal with the outbreak and has sent stool samples to a lab to determine the cause. The agency confirmed 284 of the ship's 2,881 passengers reported being ill during its Feb. 26 voyage, along with 34 crew members, according to its website.

In late February, more than 300 people aboard a Princess Cruises ship fell ill with diarrhea and vomiting, according to the CDC, though the agency didn’t cite the cause of the illness that sickened the 284 passengers and 34 crew. The Ruby Princess increased disinfection and cleaning procedures in the wake of the outbreak. In a statement to The Washington Post, the Cruise Lines International Association said that gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships are "quite rare" compared to those on land. According to the CDC, the most common settings for norovirus outbreaks are health care facilities, restaurants or catered events, schools, day cares and, of course, cruise ships. Several weeks prior, a Celebrity Summit cruise ship reported an outbreak of norovirus that sickened more than 150 passengers and 25 crew members, per the CDC. It was the third norovirus outbreak on a Celebrity Cruises vessel this year.

"Cruise ship virus" politics

The main symptoms passengers were experiencing were vomiting and diarrhea. The CDC has logged 13 outbreaks on cruise ships that met its threshold for public notification so far this year, more than any year between 2017 and 2019. The “vomiting” should be a tip off as to what may happen when you get infected with norovirus. The most common symptoms of a norovirus infection are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping.

It operates hospital ships since 1978 and also has currently the world's largest hospital ship (excluding navy vessels) - MV Africa Mercy. On most vessels, the medical facilities are located midship on a lower deck (for easier access and better stability) and usually among other crew facilities. Every passenger stateroom has the Infirmary's number - posted or by the cabin's phone. Most hospital ships are navy vessels (operated by military forces) which are specifically built for use in war zones.

Failing to comply with the crew's orders results in fines or even discharge from the ship. Exposure to less than 100 norovirus particles can make someone sick, and infected people typically shed billions of particles, according to the CDC. It only takes a small number of virus particles for norovirus to spread, which is why norovirus causes so many explosive outbreaks, Ko previously told TODAY.com. There's nothing like a stomach virus to ruin your vacation, as hundreds of cruise ship passengers have unfortunately learned this year. “I think that’s the first step they’ve taken in terms of improving the air filtration system, which removes almost all of the airborne pathogens,” she says. Dual outbreaks of gastro and COVID on the Grand Princess cruise ship that docked in Adelaide on Monday have now been declared over by the doctor on board.

Search for medical assistance - consult the ship's physician if no actions provide relief. So keep your hands clean, keep your mind clear, always hope for the best. Bad, if meant to happen, will happen anyway, and nothing can change it. The cruise terminal and the near area were thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. "MSC Cruises rigorously adheres to health protocols, and the results of this inspection do not reflect the brand's high standards," the person added.

VSP epidemiologists and environmental health officers will board the ship on January 13 to conduct a formal outbreak investigation. It can survive for long periods of time on surfaces and is resistant to common disinfectants. At least 28 passengers and one crew member among the Silver Nova's 633 passengers fell ill during their 16-day Easter-themed cruise that set sail in Callao, Peru, the agency said. Passengers expecting outstanding cuisine aboard a luxury Silversea cruise liner spent much of their vacation in the ship's bathrooms with a gastrointestinal virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Monday. Those who became ill were more likely than those who did not to think that hand hygiene and isolation were not effective in preventing infection transmission, and were less likely to wash their hands after using the toilet. Given fecal contamination is a major source of norovirus transmission, this is concerning.

The total number of infected was 5542 (of those 5079 passengers and 463 crew). In 2013, the number of reported illness outbreaks on cruise ships was 22. The total number of infected was 2385 (of those 2249 passengers and 136 crew). In 2014, the number of reported illness outbreaks on cruise ships was 17.

Norovirus cases aboard cruise ships were on a steady decline between 2006 and 2019, according to CDC data. When the Covid pandemic hit, the CDC made a travel health notice advising against cruise ship travel. Because of this, there were no norovirus outbreaks in 2020 and 2021. However, in March 2022 the agency dropped the health notice, though it strongly urged against cruising without a booster shot. The hotel staff is required to implement special cleaning and disinfection procedures for sanitizing the whole ship. To do that, they use stronger solvents, like Microbac, chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide.

More severe medical emergencies can't be handled on the ship and usually require medevacs. Coast guard helicopter teams fly to the ship, hoist the passenger (accompanied by a spouse/relative and a crew nurse) and fly them to the nearest land hospital. VSP (abbrev "Vessel Sanitation Program") monitors CDC's observations on illness patterns for GI (gastrointestinal) outbreaks on passenger shipping vessels (ferries and cruise ships). Hand hygiene is key to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus — but the way you clean your hands matters, experts note. It has to be with soap and water, because alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus.

Cruise ships publish daily health and safety instructions to their passengers on how to avoid mosquito bites. Zika symptoms are fever, skin rash, pain in joints, conjunctivitis (pink eye). Other possible actions and results are red level ("Code Red") cleaning.

29 Must-Have Things to Pack for an Alaskan Cruise 11 You'd Never Think Of

clothes for alaska cruise

When it comes to packing, there’s a big difference between the classic Caribbean cruise and what you’ll experience in Alaska. Of course, you won’t be spending beach time in the warm sun… and you should probably prepare a little differently than bringing a few pairs of shorts and flip-flops. Rain PantsLayering is key when packing for an Alaskan cruise, and a pair of rain pants should never be overlooked. Waterproof rain pants will come in handy during hikes with low, wet brush, or if you’re keen on staying out on the deck for photos during some bigger swells. By pairing them with a thermal inner layer, your lower half will stay warm and dry.

Miscellaneous Alaska cruise packing list items

On an Alaskan cruise, the dress code typically ranges from casual to semi-formal. Daytime attire is casual with cruise outfits like jeans, t-shirts, and sweaters. Evenings might require smart-casual or semi-formal wear, especially for special events or formal nights. However, specific dress codes can vary based on the cruise line. So, while you’re planning your Alaska cruise itinerary, it’s important to include layers and outdoor gear to fully enjoy the scenic excursions and diverse weather conditions you may encounter.

Chances of rain also increase as the summer months go by, so don’t forget to bring all of your rain-related gear, including a light roll-up waterproof jacket, when you cruise in July. Remember that much of your time is actually going to be spent on the cruise ship. So bring your swimsuit and you can take a dip in the hot tub or even lay out if the weather is warmer and sunny. The good thing is that swimsuits don’t take a lot of room in luggage, so even if you don’t use it, it’s not a big deal.

What type of shore excursions are available during an Alaska cruise?

Don’t forget to pack clothes for formal night, your swimsuit to wear in the pool, and comfy clothes for lounging in your stateroom. When you start picking your cruise outfits for Alaska, focus on packing pieces that can be layered together. Focusing on layers will let you maximize your suitcase space, which is important since warmer clothes will be bulkier. With layers, you can also mix-and-match outfits depending on both weather and activities. Hats and gloves don’t take up a lot room to pack, and they’re worth bringing even if you’re cruising to Alaska in the summer or fall.

For women, this could include packing leggings and dark jeans as outfit staples. Leggings are extremely versatile for an Alaskan cruise; from active excursions to exploring an Alaskan town in the rain, you won't regret packing black leggings. If it's super cold, you can even layer 2 pairs of leggings for extra warmth. Waterproof hiking shoes will keep your feet dry and comfortable as you explore rugged terrains, trek through glaciers, and walk through trails in Alaska. You’ll want to pack short sleeve and long sleeve t-shirts, to wear under a fleece sweatshirt or hoodie.

The cruise ships don’t have bottles for you to take ashore and bottled water isn’t always available if you get off the beaten path. Invest in travel-size toiletries and consider sharing items like shampoo or toothpaste if you’re traveling with others. Instead of packing bulky items like towels or blankets, confirm beforehand if these will be provided on the ship.

This beanie will not only keep your ears toasty on chilly days, but the brim is helpful to shield you from the elements and your eyes from the sun. Alaska can be both cold and sunny on any given day, so this fleece-lined brimmed beanie in a wool knit will certainly see some action on your cruise. Keep in mind that every port will have ATMs available and many cruise lines also have ATMs onboard, so you don’t need to step on deck with tons of cash. This isn’t a safe idea anyway, so just have enough to get you through the first day or two after you have a chance to see how much spending you and your group are doing on average.

Undertaking an Alaskan cruise is an unparalleled travel experience that surpasses all others. The majestic glaciers, pristine waters, and the allure of the northern lights make it a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Best of all, they are cheap, don’t take up any space, and have a lot of uses. It’s about curating a wardrobe that ensures comfort while reflecting the elegance of your surroundings. One of the great things about cruising is that rules around how much luggage you can bring are relaxed. There are no fees for your bags like you might find on an airline and there are no real limits on how many bags you can bring.

It’s very important to consider the temperatures and precipitation levels depending on when you’re traveling to Alaska. Before deciding what to wear on an Alaska cruise, however, you need to first decide when you’re going to visit. For perspective, our Alaska cruise took place June 11th – 18th when temperatures were in the low to mid-50s. Be sure to check the forecast for when you’re planning to visit.

Mosquitos aren’t colloquially known as Alaska’s state bird for nothing. I’ve been to parts of Alaska where the mosquitos were nowhere to be found, and others where they swarm and poke you through your pants. Style preferences aside, the lenses stand out for their clarity, detail, and of course UV protection. Polarization cuts glare from the water and the ice in addition to pavement, reducing eye strain. The name on the ID must match the name on the reservation and identification. The staff at the hotel was exceptional. The gentleman that worked in the morning, looked like he was coordinating five jobs. He followed up with me later to make sure the problem was solved.

The Broward County Convention Center is 1.2 mi away. We have stayed there 3 times, both before and after cruises. My advice is not to wait for free shuttle. MSC Meraviglia cruise ship visits Newport Harbor, largest ever in Newport

cruise msc meraviglia

As well as in the bars and lounges, you'll also find live music in the reception area at times throughout the day and in the evenings. The fun never stops on Meraviglia, pretty well everywhere you are. Throughout the day you'll find most of the action around the main pool, with pool games, dance classes, quizzes, darts and line dancing and table tennis tournaments in the adjacent Bamboo Lounge. On December 18, 2018, MSC announced a partnership with celebrity chef Harald Wohlfahrt (3-starred Michelin chef). The German chef created a new menu of Mediterranean and international specialties for the exclusive MSC Yacht Club Restaurant on Meraviglia, Splendida, and Preziosa. He also created two new main courses for the "Elegant Night" - a formal dining event held in the Main Dining Room on each voyage.

Carousel Productions at Sea

While most experiences on this sailing fell in the latter category, it wouldn't be a fair review without calling attention to the things that I think the line needs to address. Levies extra charges, passengers have the option of paying a la carte for items individually priced as low as $2.95 or paying $17.99 for unlimited menu items. The salsa and guacamole are wonderful, the tortilla soup always hits the spot for me, and the tacos are small, so you'll be able to try several to find your favorite without feeling overstuffed.

About the MSC Meraviglia Cruise Ship

Do note that some of the junior ocean view staterooms do come with an obstructed view. Otherwise, you can rely on all ocean view staterooms to have a true ocean view via a small-ish rectangular or circular window on one end of the cabin. The studio interior cabins are specifically created for single cruisers and, as such, are on the smaller side, nearly half the size of the deluxe interior cabins in some cases. MSC Meraviglia is a cruise ship owned and operated by MSC Cruises, built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, by STX France. MSC Meraviglia is the lead ship of MSC's new "Vista Project" vessels, the Meraviglia class, with MSC Bellissima following in 2019.

Bars

Meraviglia's Western Mediterranean program was based on 7-night roundtrips leaving from 4 different homeports (Marseille France, Barcelona Spain, and Italy's Genoa and Naples). In summer 2018, Meraviglia was homeported in Hamburg Germany, which made it the ever-largest ship homeported there. Meraviglia also boasts cutting-edge wristband technology to make payments, book specialty restaurants, and spa treatments, and allow parents to geo-locate their kids. Follows the complete list of MSC Meraviglia restaurants and food bars. The boat has 18 decks, of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 11 with cabins. By annual passenger shipping volumes, MSC is ranked the world's 3rd largest cruise shipowner - following only Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group.

MSC Meraviglia Services and Wi-Fi

It has a decent variety of stations, but the food is often the same from day to day. The layout is confusing to navigate, too, with lots of nooks and crannies that can make it difficult to find what you're looking for. It was crowded beyond reason during mealtimes, so I avoided it whenever possible, only eating there twice during the voyage for research purposes. The largest — L'Olive Dorée and L'Olivo D'Oro, which are mirrors of one another — are found on Deck 6, across from one another and flanking the hallway that eventually leads to Panorama.

MSC Meraviglia or MSC Seaside? Two Excellent Options with Different Styles

Gratuities, room service and premium alcohol and Wi-Fi packages are included in all Yacht Club fares. You do not need to purchase add-ons or pay added fees like you would in cabins outside the Yacht Club. My cabin came with a pillow menu, which I only discovered after two nights of neck pain, thanks to mismatched pillows. The bed was topped with a memory foam mattress, which was like sleeping on a cloud.

cruise msc meraviglia

I had the single best coffee drink of my life when we called on Ocean Cay. The Coco-Nilla Latte is espresso, vanilla flavoring and coconut milk, and I loved it so much that I tried to have it replicated on board. Speaking of the theater, no drinks are allowed in there, which is odd, given that all other cruise lines allow passengers to order drinks during shows or at least carry them in with them to enjoy while they watch.

If you're seeking the oft-missed cigar lounge, look for the entrance on the starboard (right, when facing forward) side of the Sky Lounge entrance, or enter the lounge and follow it around to the starboard side. I ate there on one night of my sailing and decided to go big by adding jumbo lump crab to my filet mignon. However, I misread the menu and didn't realize it was actually jumbo lump crab Oscar, which meant it arrived mixed with hollandaise sauce. It looked like scrambled eggs, and I'm not a hollandaise fan, so I didn't eat it.

If you'd rather get your groove on, keep an eye out for dance lessons and themed parties hosted by the entertainment team. My favorite was the Snow Party, when the crew blasted fake snow (which appeared to be suds of some sort) as we danced on the blazing hot pool deck. As with most cruise ships, you don't have to go far to find a stiff drink on MSC Meraviglia.

The luxurious surroundings of the Sky Lounge make it a fantastic meeting place. While you listen to live piano music, enjoy a drink after a long day exploring on shore. This multipurpose bar is ideal for any number of sociable moments throughout your cruise. There's a smoking room with a humidor. And a selection of complimentary hot and cold snacks will keep hunger at bay.

Indulge in the luxury of a private club, while enjoying access to the myriad recreation and entertainment possibilities that the rest of the ship affords. Order a drink from our wide variety of selected cocktails, mocktails, beer, wine and fine spirits to refresh yourself while you take a break from play. The boutique offers a wide assortment of delectable French macaroons and freshly roasted coffee. MSC Meraviglia's main restaurants serve freshly prepared Mediterranean and international cuisine, while the ship’s specialty restaurants serve up Italian delicacies, succulent steaks, superb sushi and more. Discover a place where you can savor exclusivity and privacy in a world of choice. In addition to feeling crowded, the vessel charges extra for many things that will make your overall cruise better.

Even though most passengers were European back when MSC Meraviglia launched in Italy in 2017, the crowd is now more of a mix, especially for its Caribbean sailings, when passengers of all nationalities can be seen onboard. The average age is around the early 40s for adults, though with the strong emphasis on family expect literally hundreds of kids during school vacations, all of which are extremely well catered for. The only thing that some might find jarring is the fact that there are no adult-only areas on the ship. Exclusive to MSC Yacht Club Guests, the MSC Yacht Club Sundeck & Bar, offers a luxurious and tranquil place to enjoy an aperitif.Surround yourself in the lap of luxury and let our artful bar tenders prepare something special for you! Discover a place where you can savour exclusivity and privacy in a world of choice.

When it entered service in June 2017, it was the sixth largest cruise ship in the world, behind Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class cruise ships and AIDAnova. MSC Meraviglia takes it up a notch in terms of catering for kids, with a kids' club -- Doremi Land -- that is up there with the best at sea. As well as dedicated rooms by age group, there is also an interactive family room and a "Lab" where kids can use a 3D printer, laptops and conduct experiments.

There is a per child, per hour charge for use of the kids' clubs; free otherwise. The atrium rises three decks and is criss-crossed by four chrome staircases, every stair encrusted with Swarovski crystals -- more than 31,000 in total. There is a grand piano on a raised dais, with performances in the early evening. Prior to New York, Meraviglia offered a 17-night Transatlantic crossing from Kiel Germany, with call ports in Canada, Denmark, Iceland, the UK. MSC Meraviglia's itinerary program is currently based on Caribbean deployment and homeporting in NYC New York USA.

However, on the first day, when I had questions about dining, the person who assisted me waived me off in the face of a long line at the desk and told me to ask my butler. My interactions there improved markedly after the stress of the first day calmed down, and all of my subsequent questions were answered promptly and cheerfully. However, some of that was offset by the fact that the shower in my bathroom had no lip, so water leaked all over the first time I used it. Each time after, I put towels outside the door to sop up the mess.

Its entire ceiling covered by a huge LED screen that displays changing vistas and atmospheres throughout the day and night. Magnificent views of the sea, fantastic cocktails, The Horizon Bar is the place to be. Gaze out over the stunning panorama of the ocean while you sip on a cocktail at the Horizon Bar. With our handpicked and carefully sourced drinks and fresh ingredients we are sure that you will be spoilt for choice. Catch the big game, enjoy quality entertainment, or relax with a cocktail at the convivial Sports Bar.

In Africa, the company operates the 28-passenger Zambezi Queen (pictured) sailing the Chobe River. In Egypt, AmaDahlia operates Nile River Cruises and will soon be joined by a second ship AmaLilia, in 2024. AmaWaterways will begin cruising in Latin America on a new ship, AmaMagdelana. Guests can soar above the vineyards on a gondola ride to the hilltop Niederwald Monument, join a wine tasting, visit the unique Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet museum, and take a guided biking or hiking tour.

Both lines sail on the Danube, Rhine, Moselle, Main, Rhone, Seine, Garonne, Elbe, Dordogne and Douro in Europe, and both offer Christmas markets cruises. In 2023 it will launch a series of 46-night sailings through Europe on four ships and in 2024 will become the first line to offer sailings on Colombia's Magdalena River. With both lines, exotic itineraries in Asia Africa often combine longer land tours with time on the rivers.

EUROPEAN WINE REGIONS

Guests can explore at their own speed, with most walking tours available at gentle, regular, and active paces. The tour options were excellent, and I often wished I could clone myself so I could experience multiple tours offered simultaneously. We are delighted to share with you some featured itineraries for our current and upcoming sailing seasons – all of which are now available for reservations. Two iconic cities, Prague and Paris, bookend this perfect journey that combines three beautiful rivers, each of which is striking in its own unique way. From the meandering Main to the UNESCO-designated Upper Middle Rhine Valley with its multitude of castles dotting its shores to the vineyard-clad hills of the Moselle, enjoy Europe at its most picturesque. Let the storybook villages—Bernkastel, Cochem and Wertheim—captivate you; and Rothenburg, located on the Romantic Road enchant you.

While operating sustainable, environmentally friendly ships is fundamental to AmaWaterways, both Zambezi Queen and AmaMagna go above and beyond with eco-friendly features. Zambezi Queen, which explores the Chobe River in Africa, uses a five-stage water purification plant, employing river water in the showers and tap aboard. The ship’s water jet propulsion system replaces a conventional system, ensuring there is no damage to the riverbed. Throughout the night, the ship operates on battery power and only the low-emission generators run throughout the day. Viking's sun decks offer more space, in part because the area isn't used for pools or storing bicycles. Each of these cabins features a twin bed and space for one, perfect for solo cruisers.

These small staterooms on the Cello and Violin decks have French balconies—that is, the floor-to-ceiling window-door slides open entirely. CA cabins (170 square feet) have a small seating area, but CB cabins (155 square feet) don’t. AmaSiena has 78 staterooms across nine room types, each of which can have the bed configured as a queen or two twins. They’re all exterior cabins decorated in the ship’s signature red-and-gray color palette, equipped with hairdryers, safes, telephones, TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, a desk and chair, and a (somewhat cramped) en-suite bathroom with a shower. Here’s what else you can expect from each room, from least expensive to most.

Even at the lowest level, Viking's cabins include exceptional storage space, with lots of drawers and underbed space for storing suitcases. Cabins also feature great lighting, which employs dimmer switches and bedside controls. Bathrooms have heated floors, a surprising and wonderful detail, especially in the middle of the night. AmaWaterways cabins are quite colorful, with stark whites contrasting bright pops of pink or red patterns. Unlike Viking's Longships, in which decor is almost identical from ship to ship, AmaWaterways' cabins feature different decorations, depending on the vessel.

At night, the Aquavit Terrace serves a set menu that can be enjoyed as often as you'd like throughout your cruise. No need to dress for dinner here, and passengers don't have to show up at a set time, either. Trying to decide whether you want to sail AmaWaterways vs. Viking River Cruises is tricky. After all, both look pretty similar from the outside, both cater (and market) to North American passengers and both sail on virtually all of the world's major rivers -- they even include many of the same ports. Let us help you learn more so you can choose between these two river cruise lines.
